Terms of use
These terms govern your use of The Goodwill Ledger, including its published content, machine-readable interfaces and software tools. The aim is simple: use what is published here freely and constructively, but do not misuse it, misrepresent it or rely on it for something it was not designed to do.

Who operates this site
The Goodwill Ledger is a personal publication and collection of software tools operated by Veemal Gungadin, based in Mauritius. References on this page to "The Goodwill Ledger", "the site", "we" or "us" refer to that publication and its operator.
By using the site or one of its tools, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, do not use the relevant service.
What is published here
The Goodwill Ledger contains essays, field notes, frameworks, machine-readable material and software tools.
The views expressed in published writing are personal unless explicitly stated otherwise. They do not necessarily represent the position of any organisation with which the author is associated.
The tools section may contain utilities, demonstrations, educational tools, research tools, calculators, prototypes, experiments, AI-powered applications or other forms of software. Different tools may have different purposes and may operate in different ways.
A particular tool may display additional instructions, limitations or terms. Where those are more specific than these general terms, the more specific conditions apply to that tool.
Use the site responsibly
You may read, explore and use the site and its tools for lawful purposes.
You may not use the site or a tool to:
- break the law or encourage someone else to do so;
- deceive, defraud, threaten or deliberately harm another person;
- impersonate another person or organisation in a misleading way;
- obtain passwords, authentication codes, financial information or other sensitive information without proper authority;
- gain unauthorised access to a device, account, system, network or data;
- distribute malware or other harmful code;
- interfere with, overload or deliberately disrupt the site or its infrastructure;
- bypass technical restrictions or security controls;
- conduct security testing against systems you do not own or have permission to test;
- use a demonstration or simulation as the basis for a real attack;
- unlawfully collect, monitor or profile people;
- remove or falsely represent authorship, copyright or other attribution; or
- use the site in a way that infringes the rights of another person.
Trying to understand how a tool works, learning from it or carrying out legitimate security research is not prohibited merely because it involves technical examination. The important distinction is authority, intent and harm.
Using tools
Tools are provided for the purpose described on their respective pages. Use them with judgement.
Some tools may be experimental or deliberately simplified. They may change, be withdrawn or behave differently as browsers, external services, AI models or other technology changes.
Unless a particular tool expressly says otherwise, you should not treat it as infrastructure on which a critical business process, safety decision or other high-consequence activity depends. You are responsible for deciding whether a tool is appropriate for what you intend to do with it.
Using tools with other people
Some tools may be designed to be used with a classroom, company, event, research group, workshop or other group of people. If you organise or facilitate such use, you are responsible for using the tool appropriately in that context.
That includes explaining the activity where appropriate, respecting participants' choices and obtaining any permission, consent or organisational approval that your circumstances require.
A tool being publicly available does not itself give an organiser authority to collect information from, test, photograph, record or otherwise interact with another person. Additional safeguards may apply where children or other protected groups are involved.
Information you provide
Some tools may allow you to enter text, upload material, provide information or otherwise submit content. You remain responsible for what you provide.
Do not submit material that you do not have the right to use. Do not enter passwords, authentication codes, payment-card details, confidential information, sensitive personal information or other material requiring special protection unless the tool explicitly says that it is designed to receive that kind of information.
You retain any rights you already have in material you provide. To the extent that processing your material is necessary for a tool to perform the function you requested, you give The Goodwill Ledger permission to process it for that purpose.
How personal information is handled is described in the privacy policy.
AI and automated output
Some tools may use artificial intelligence, automated analysis or external models. Such systems can make mistakes. Their output may be incomplete, inaccurate, outdated, misleading or inappropriate for your particular circumstances.
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, automated output is provided to assist your own thinking and should not be treated as a substitute for professional judgement or independent verification. You remain responsible for decisions you make based on an output.
Particular care should be taken where an output could affect someone's health, safety, legal rights, finances, employment, education or another significant interest.
Published writing is not professional advice
Essays, field notes, frameworks and other published material express ideas, analysis and personal perspectives. They are not legal, financial, medical, investment, cybersecurity or other professional advice.
Examples are provided to illustrate ideas. Circumstances differ, information changes and an example that makes sense in one context may not make sense in another. Where professional advice matters, obtain it from someone qualified to advise on your particular situation.
Third-party services
A page or tool may link to, communicate with or rely on a service operated by someone else. The Goodwill Ledger does not control those services. Their availability, content and processing practices are governed by their respective operators and, where applicable, their own terms and privacy policies.
A link to another service does not necessarily constitute an endorsement of everything published or provided there.
Intellectual property
Unless otherwise stated, the writing, design, original graphics and other original material published on The Goodwill Ledger are protected by copyright and other applicable intellectual-property rights.
You are welcome to link to published material and to quote reasonable extracts with appropriate attribution. You may not reproduce substantial parts of the publication, republish an entire work or present the author's work as your own without permission, except where the law independently allows it.
The site deliberately makes some published material available through RSS, structured indexes and machine-readable interfaces. Software may access material through those interfaces in accordance with the way those interfaces are provided and any technical limits applied to them. Access through a machine-readable interface does not transfer ownership of the underlying material.
Software and open source
Rights relating to a software tool may be different from rights relating to the site's written content. A tool, library, source-code repository or other software component may be released under its own licence, including an open-source licence.
Where a separate software licence is provided, that licence governs use of the code or software to which it applies. Nothing in these general terms is intended to take away rights expressly granted under an applicable open-source licence.
Feedback
Thoughtful criticism, suggestions and ideas are welcome. If you send feedback about the publication or a tool, you agree that it may be considered and used to improve the work without creating an obligation to compensate you or incorporate the suggestion.
Your private correspondence will not be publicly attributed to you without permission.
Availability and changes
The Goodwill Ledger is an evolving personal project. Content may be revised. Tools may be updated, replaced, suspended or removed. Features may be added or changed.
There is no promise that a particular page, interface, tool or feature will remain available indefinitely. Reasonable efforts may be made to keep things working, but continuous or error-free availability is not guaranteed.
No warranty
The site, its content and its tools are provided on an "as available" basis. Reasonable care is taken in what is published and built, but no guarantee is made that everything will always be accurate, complete, secure, current, available or suitable for every purpose.
Software contains bugs. External systems fail. Browsers behave differently. AI systems can produce incorrect results. Published ideas may become outdated. You should take those realities into account when deciding how much to rely on something provided here.
Nothing in these terms excludes any guarantee, right or obligation that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Responsibility and liability
You are responsible for how you use the site, its tools and their outputs.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, The Goodwill Ledger and its operator will not be responsible for indirect or consequential loss arising merely from your use of, inability to use or reliance on the site, a tool or its output.
This includes loss arising from using a tool for a purpose for which it was not designed, ignoring an instruction or warning, relying on an automated output without appropriate verification, or using a tool unlawfully against another person or system.
Nothing in these terms is intended to exclude or limit liability where doing so would be unlawful.
Suspension of access
Access to a tool or service may be limited or blocked where reasonably necessary to protect the service, its users or other people from abuse, attack or unlawful activity. Technical controls such as rate limits may also be used to keep services available and secure.
Additional services
If The Goodwill Ledger later introduces a service involving accounts, payment, subscriptions, licences, organisational use or another arrangement requiring additional conditions, separate terms may apply to that service. Those terms will be presented where relevant. They will not silently change the terms governing something unrelated.
Privacy
Use of the site is also subject to the privacy policy. The privacy policy explains what information is processed, why it is processed and how it is handled.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Mauritius. Any dispute relating to these terms or the operation of The Goodwill Ledger is subject to the jurisdiction of the competent courts of Mauritius, subject to any rights or jurisdiction that applicable law does not allow the parties to exclude.
Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated as the publication, its tools and the ways people use them evolve. Material changes will be reflected on this page. The date below records the most recent revision.
